Willie Nelson & Family: New Years Eve

December 31st, 2011 will always be a special memory for me. There’s nothing like celebrating New Years Eve with family and friends at the Moody Theater while watching Willie Nelson & Family bring in the New Year. That night was very magical; you could feel the energy in the air. I was also lucky enough to have one of my closest friends in attendance, Sir Kiko.

I remember repeatedly checking my gear over and over again in a seemingly paranoid fashion; must have been something in the air that night! I often tell people that when I photograph, Willie Nelson, it feels like the first time, every time. I mean let’s be honest here, the man is a legend.

Once of the main reasons I like photographing Willie is his charisma; the way he works a crowd is incredibly inspiring; every song is like a story time adventure; he just has so much character. I’ve always felt confident that I could capture Willie in an iconic and flattering way. I feel comforted when his long time fans compliment my work and ask me to sign their prints.

After a superb set from, Jamey Johnson, the drifter took the stage and electrified the crowd. I remember the fans moving forward towards the stage in an effort to get a closer look at him. Stage front and ready to take photos, I was suddenly surrounded by screaming fans reaching out to him. Hands down, Willie has the best fans in the world!  I wasn’t able to take a photo until the second song.

Watching Willie on stage playing music with his family & friends is very endearing; having the opportunity to experience it and document it is very humbling. Everything about Willie is fascinating from his storied past to his red bandana & braided hair; the Red Headed Stranger is without a doubt my favorite artist to photograph.

To see more photos of Willie Nelson click here, music photographer.

If you haven’t seen Willie in concert you should definitely make it a priority; he’s still on the road playing music with his friends all over the county. The entire cast of characters including his family, band, crew and fans are like one big family; they’re approachable, friendly, and gracious. Go online right now and buy tickets to the next show in your town.

Pistol Annies: “Hell on Heels” Album Review

Pistol Annies
(Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley)

Trailer parks, heartaches, addiction, babies, coon dogs, rambling women and family feuds; throw all of these ingredients into a blender, hit the highest speed, and you get Pistol Annies debut Album “Hell on Heels”. This album is packed with 10 tracks of bare boned, straight from the heart, emotion and drama; it absolutely leaves you in anticipation for the next album.

The traditional country sound of Pistol Annies is music to the ears, sending you back to the days when grandma used to babysit, a time when the sounds of Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and the show, ‘Hee Haw’, resonated through the house.

Pistol Annies

“Hell on Heels” opens the album with a great sense of attitude and drama; vocally introducing Pistol Annies members, Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. While “Lemon Drop” offers a positive outlook to a life outside of the trailer park, “Beige” reels you back down with a wedding due to unplanned pregnancy and how a daughter brings shame to the family according the lyrics “the bride shouldn’t be 4 months and 3 weeks.” Can you say Bible Belt? Opps!

“Bad Example” is a fun, in your face song to all the so-called good girls who cross their legs and raise their pinkies while drinking tea, eating crumpets and discuss how much money their man makes a year. “Somebody had to set a bad example, teach all the prim and proper’s what not to do.” When a woman has a rebellious edge to her; it makes conversations more interesting more often than not.

“I’ve been thinking about going off the deep end…” from “House Wife’s Prayer” and “She’s only been in the ground a day or two…” from “Family Feud” are definitely the darker or more depressing songs off of the album. However it wouldn’t be country album though if someone didn’t die, think about dying or talk about their mama.

Pistol Annies

On the flip side of mama, the Pistol Annies have the husband bashing “The Hunters Wife” and “Trailer for Rent.” If you have a man in your life that likes to hunt or fish you will find humor in “The Hunter’s Wife” but you probably won’t be eating “squirrel gravy” or “coon stew” -gross! This song would be great in a Redneck Sporting Goods commercial.

“Taking Pills” is a lyrical story of 3 honest women’s life on-the-road run down from having an addiction, to eating at trucks stops, and trying to put gas in the van to get to the next gig to pay bills. It’s definitely a fun, upbeat track that will stick in your head for a while.

“Boys from the South” is the only track on the album to fall in the love song category. It’s written with the idea of finding a lover or at least day dreaming about one. “Maybe he’s in Georgia, starin’ at the stars, maybe Tennessee pickin’ on a guitar right now. There’s something ‘bout a boy from the south.”

With the album’s traditional country sound, both vocally and musically; Pistol Annies take us back in time to the early 1960’s and 1970’s and reminds us of the greats like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn. One can only hope that their sophomore album produces the same results.

Jim Marshall Proof – Iconic Images of Famous Rock Stars

Jim Marshall is arguably the most iconic music photographer that has ever lived. His images span back to the early 60’s featuring artists like the Beatles, the Stones, Janis Joplin, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and so many more. Jim’s access to musicians was unprecedented, allowing him the opportunity to capture intimate behind the scene photos of their tours and personal lives. Though Jim is no longer with us, his sprit and iconic images will live on forever.

Prior to Jim’s passing, he released a hardcover photography book entitled, ‘Proof’, featuring some of his most cherished work. The back cover reads, “Proof is a rare glimpse at the creative process of one of the world’s greatest rock-and-roll photographers, reproducing over sixty proof sheets and accompanying hero shots. Taken together they form a photography book unlike others, providing access to great unknown pictures, and insight into the legendary shots of illustrious musical artists and entertainers from the 1960s to the present day”.

If every picture tells a story, a proof sheet speaks volumes – Jim Marshall

I highly recommend Jim Marshall’s book, it is a must have for anyone who loves music or photography. You can find, ‘Proof’, on a variety of websites including, Amazon.

Annie Drury – Tattoos & Brass Shoes

I recently came across an artist named, Annie Drury; I really dig her melodic style. Here is a video that I found on YouTube. I highly recommend checking her out.

The featured video, along with her lovely photography stills, were shot by ‘Shot By Sodium‘ out of the United Kingdom. They really did a great job; the overall production is incredible.

I hope you enjoy her music…

Texas Troubadours by Steve Harris

I was recently giving a wonderful gift by one of my closest friends, a photography inspired hardcover book entitled, Texas Troubadours. The book was created by professional photographer, Steve Harris, a brilliant photographer out of Houston, Texas. His book is lined with unique black & white portraits of Texas musicians and industry icons.

One of the things I like most about the book, other than the photography, is that Steve creatively placed handwritten quotes from each of the artists next to their portraits; a feature that really adds warmth and feel. The most striking aspect of the book, is of course, the array of beautiful images that fill the pages. The overall quality of the book itself is excellent, it really presents well. No doubt, Steve spent an impressive amount of time on this project.

You can purchase Steve’s book on a variety of website including Amazon. I strongly recommend this book; it is the perfect gift for anyone who loves music.

Daniel Lanois at ACL Music Festival – Austin, TX

I had the pleasure of spending some time with musician/producer Daniel Lanois at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Daniel was at the festival to perform with his band, Black Dub, an incredible band with an all-star lineup consisting of Trixie Whitley, Brian Blade, and Daryl Johnson.

Daniel has produced a number of albums over the years for artists like U2, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, and so many more. Definitely take the time to research his career; you’ll be happy that you did.

While conversing in the artist village we decided to do a quick little mini shoot, something random and last minute. As you can see, we basically used members of the other bands and industry people that were backstage at the time as our backdrop. The photo turned out great, it absolutely captured the moment. I’m definitely happy that I shot it in black & white, it makes the image so much more classic and timeless.

Anyway, Daniel is truly a great musicians and an even better guy; I’m happy we had the opportunity to chat. I definitely look forward to working with him in the near future.
