Andy Warhol: Fame and Misfortune

San Antonio doesn’t often register on the scale of artistically heavyweight cities. However, in the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio boasts the first collection of Modern Art in Texas and one of the best private collections in the country. Originally established in 1950 upon the death of Ohio-born oil heiress Elisabet McNay, the McNay Art Museum opened its doors in 1954 with more than 700 works of modern art amassed by McNay during her life. At present time, the museum holds more than 20,000 works of art and has expanded its scope to include, among other things, Medieval and Renaissance Art.

Currently, the McNay is showcasing the works of Andy Warhol in an exhibit exclusive to San Antonio entitled, Andy Warhol: Fame and Misfortune. The exhibit’s curators have drawn from the vibrant collections of the Andy Warhol Museum to assemble a broad survey of the artist’s work. Over 150 pieces in all media and spanning at least three decades of his career are intended to provide a survey of Warhol’s twin obsessions of fame and disaster.
To aid us in our understanding of at least half of Warhol’s obsession and to further entice us to catch this exhibit before its 15 minutes are up, the McNay has put together something special for your Sunday Funday in the form of their “Warhol Sunday Nights” series. In the Chiego Lecture Hall, the McNay is showing films from the stars of Hollywood’s heyday. Admissions to the films are included with your price of admission to the museum’s exhibit, which, conveniently, is also discounted to half-price on Sunday nights! On Sunday, May 13, at 4:00, see Academy Award Winner Joan Crawford in the role that insured her place in Hollywood history, 1954’s Mildred Pierce. At 6:00, watch the teenage cannoodling of Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood in Entertainment Weekly’s # 50 best high school movie of all time, Splendor in the Grass.

On Sunday, May 20, close the exhibit with two of Hollywood’s grand dames.  At 4:00, hear Judy Garland’s legendary voice on the classic songs in Meet Me in St. Louis, and then at 6:00, stay for something a bit more risqué as her daughter, Liza Minnelli, and Joel Gray show us that, at least in 1930’s Berlin, life is a Cabaret.

Social Distortion Concert Review

It’s Sunday night, May 6, 2012, and there’s a sea of black-clad rockers crammed into a muddy Stubb’s Amphitheatre, drinking Lone Star Beer and clamoring to see Social Distortion, one of American punk rock’s last standing bands.

Formed in 1979 when the charismatic lead singer was just 17, the band known to legions of fans as simply Social D, has been together in some form or fashion for almost four decades.   I’ve seen several shows since my first in the mid- 1990s.  Ness, once known as much for his on- and off- stage brawling and battles with drug addiction as for his music, has, by all accounts, mellowed with age; Social Distortion, however, has not.

Social Distortion by Christopher Durst

In an obvious homage to fellow artist Adam “MCA” Yaunch’s recent passing, the band takes the stage to “No Sleep Til Brooklyn.”  As one would expect in a musically diverse town such as Austin, the crowd goes wild at the first beats of the song, and stays with Ness and his boys through every measure as they proceed to jam through a hit-heavy set which includes, “Ball and Chain”, “Sick Boys”, “Machine Gun Blues”, their cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”, and my personal favorite, “The Story of my Life”.

Ness, a master at working the crowd, artfully mixes in newer material from the bands 2011 release Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, including “Bakersfield”, a song much more akin to something written by The Man in Black than Black Flag.

The set, perhaps more than in past shows I’ve seen, really seems to showcase Ness’ love of Outlaw Country, Southern Rock and Blues.  In the crowd, perhaps because this IS Texas, after all, the cowboy boots outnumber the Doc Martins, and there are more pearl snap shirts than either mohawks or leather jackets.   However, we have come here to ROCK and Social D delivers, their guitars chugging in a train-like rhythm behind Ness’ vocals about the folly of youth, impulsiveness, and the inevitable struggle for maturity.

Pistol Annies: “Hell on Heels” Album Review

Pistol Annies
(Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley)

Trailer parks, heartaches, addiction, babies, coon dogs, rambling women and family feuds; throw all of these ingredients into a blender, hit the highest speed, and you get Pistol Annies debut Album “Hell on Heels”. This album is packed with 10 tracks of bare boned, straight from the heart, emotion and drama; it absolutely leaves you in anticipation for the next album.

The traditional country sound of Pistol Annies is music to the ears, sending you back to the days when grandma used to babysit, a time when the sounds of Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and the show, ‘Hee Haw’, resonated through the house.

Pistol Annies

“Hell on Heels” opens the album with a great sense of attitude and drama; vocally introducing Pistol Annies members, Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. While “Lemon Drop” offers a positive outlook to a life outside of the trailer park, “Beige” reels you back down with a wedding due to unplanned pregnancy and how a daughter brings shame to the family according the lyrics “the bride shouldn’t be 4 months and 3 weeks.” Can you say Bible Belt? Opps!

“Bad Example” is a fun, in your face song to all the so-called good girls who cross their legs and raise their pinkies while drinking tea, eating crumpets and discuss how much money their man makes a year. “Somebody had to set a bad example, teach all the prim and proper’s what not to do.” When a woman has a rebellious edge to her; it makes conversations more interesting more often than not.

“I’ve been thinking about going off the deep end…” from “House Wife’s Prayer” and “She’s only been in the ground a day or two…” from “Family Feud” are definitely the darker or more depressing songs off of the album. However it wouldn’t be country album though if someone didn’t die, think about dying or talk about their mama.

Pistol Annies

On the flip side of mama, the Pistol Annies have the husband bashing “The Hunters Wife” and “Trailer for Rent.” If you have a man in your life that likes to hunt or fish you will find humor in “The Hunter’s Wife” but you probably won’t be eating “squirrel gravy” or “coon stew” -gross! This song would be great in a Redneck Sporting Goods commercial.

“Taking Pills” is a lyrical story of 3 honest women’s life on-the-road run down from having an addiction, to eating at trucks stops, and trying to put gas in the van to get to the next gig to pay bills. It’s definitely a fun, upbeat track that will stick in your head for a while.

“Boys from the South” is the only track on the album to fall in the love song category. It’s written with the idea of finding a lover or at least day dreaming about one. “Maybe he’s in Georgia, starin’ at the stars, maybe Tennessee pickin’ on a guitar right now. There’s something ‘bout a boy from the south.”

With the album’s traditional country sound, both vocally and musically; Pistol Annies take us back in time to the early 1960’s and 1970’s and reminds us of the greats like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn. One can only hope that their sophomore album produces the same results.

Album Review by Kimberly Thomas

Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll

Counterculture or Normality

Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll…a cliché, yes; however, fitting nonetheless. These three things are more compatible than babies and breast milk. Since before the time of Elvis, musicians have been frolicking in the sounds of music, the escape of drugs and the pants of women. It has been the overwhelmingly accepted ideology of mainstream America for decades. What is it about music that attracts hoards of swooning women and the lust of the underworld? Is it the rebellious behavior and the fast cars?

The Sixties‘ ushered in a revolution of illicit drug experimentation, sexual freedom and exploration, and the iconic sounds of bands like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and many more. It was during this historic period that most believe the phrase, ‘Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll’, was coined. Whenever the conception, this phrase has been a staple in entertainment for years.

There is something so seductive and sexy about this phrase. It represents a counterculture lifestyle that most of humanity has never, and will never, experience; it’s like the forbidden fruit of Biblical times. For obvious reasons, mainstream American has become increasingly fascinated with the phrase. It has become a branding of sorts for anyone living a life of debauchery, entertainment, art and music. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t exactly sound like a bad life.

Though Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll began as three separate entities occasionally representing misled youth and rebellion, it is now a widely used phrase seen on t-shirts, posters and coffee cups in ivy league dorm rooms across America.

‘Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll’, has become a trendy party phrase used by both Main Street and Wall Street America. Luckily, I became a music photographer

Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll

Iconic Imagery of Country Music

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to photograph some of the most successful names in country music. Photographing country artists is a true passion of mine; I have always felt a deep connection with their music. What I love the most about country music is the honesty and emotion that goes into the songs; the real life storylines, minimalist chord progressions and classic arrangements. Country music is truly inspiring; there is no better music.

I really enjoy working with country music artists due to their southern hospitality, small town charm and infectious smiles. I have always felt a sense of comfort and welcome when I’m around country artists; which certainly helps as a photographer. Having the opportunity to build respect, trust and loyalty with the artists that you photograph is an incredible experience. Spending time with an artist gives you the opportunity to study their personality traits, southern etiquette and mannerisms; which is crucial when trying to capture their true spirit on film.

Since the 1950’s, country music photography has been instrumental in publicly defining an artist. From Patsy Cline to Dolly Parton, Hank Williams to Willie Nelson, their larger than life personalities and individuality have played a huge role in the marketing of their music. Even more so today, classic images of musicians like Patsy Cline and Hank Williams are instrumental in the continued marketing and longevity of their estates.

Photographing an artist takes careful consideration and planning; it takes time and creativity to develop a campaign that is authentically unique to the artist. It is extremely imperative that country music fans identify with an artist on a personal level to ensure a successful and lengthy career. For years, country music photographers have been closely collaborating with country musicians in an effort to develop imagery that successfully represents the embodiment and history of country music.

As a country music photographer, I feel a certain sense of responsibility to protect and honor the history of country music by continuing to create classic imagery that is timeless, yet reflective of modern day music. Over the years, I have developed a deep appreciation for the history of country music and the imagery that has defined it. I truly admire the musicians and photographers that built the foundation of the career I have today.

“Country music is three chords and the truth.” – Harlan Howard
